DigiD: your digital ID in the Netherlands

If you’ve recently moved to the Netherlands, chances are you’ve already heard about DigiD. It’s one of the crucial tools for everyday life, simplifying your interactions with the governmental services.

What is DigiD?

DigiD (Digital Identification) is your personal digital ID in the Netherlands. With a username and password (or, more conveniently, the mobile app), you confirm your identity when using online services provided by Dutch government institutions.

Why do you need DigiD?

DigiD is essential in many areas of daily life, for example:

  • registering with a general practitioner (huisarts)
  • arranging your health insurance
  • accessing tax information and filing tax returns
  • checking or updating your details at the municipality
  • applying for allowances and benefits (such as housing or childcare allowance)
  • accessing DUO’s portal (education and student loans)

In short: without DigiD, many important services are either unavailable or take much longer and sometimes require your personal presence.

What do you need to apply?

To apply for DigiD, you must have:

  • a valid BSN (Burger Service Nummer)
  • a registered address in the Netherlands
  • a valid local phone number and e-mail address (for verification)

How to apply for DigiD?

  1. Go to https://www.digid.nl/en or download a DigiD app.
  2. Click “Apply”.
  3. Fill in the online form with your BSN, date of birth, postcode, and address.
  4. Create a username and a password.
  5. Within a few days, you’ll receive a letter by post with an activation code.
  6. Enter this code on the website or in the DigiD app to activate your account.

💡 Tip: download the DigiD mobile app right away. It’s more secure and much easier to use than logging in with just a username and password.
